Salon Series returns Nov. 5; CSO beat goes on

By Peggie MillerPerforming arts columnist

The second presentation in this 10th season of THE WOODLANDS SALON SERIES happens Nov. 5 in its traditional location, SCOTT CUTLER’S fabled music room.

The facilitating artist is JADE SIMMONS, with abundant accomplishments, including being first runner up in the 2000 Miss America Pageant.

Ms. Simmons was last featured in the 2009 salon series. Classically trained by noted JON KIMURA PARKER, she has branched out beyond solo and orchestral performances.

As the celebrated Internet host of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Competition, Ms. Simmons now concentrates on the IMPULSE ARTIST SERIES which promotes the highest caliber of young classical musicians.

“The November concert will allow each of these artists to perform a portion of their individual recitals,” Scott said. “While the exact complement of musicians has not yet been confirmed, likely you will hear solo piano, harp, and trumpet.”

The Nov. 5 event begins at 7:30 p.m. with wine, hors d’oeuvres and genteel conversation, followed by the performance at 8.

Admission in advance is $25, for adults; $15 students. It’s $5 more at the door – but lots of luck showing up without a reservation! For more, go to www.WoodlandsSalonSeries.org., and don’t dawdle; this event sells out fast! Credit cards are accepted.

Full version:
Each year, several thousand classically trained musicians finish their studies and enter the workplace. With a limited number of orchestral jobs available and presenters are booking fewer recitalists than ever before, many of these “emerging artists” are creating work for themselves by becoming more entrepreneurial in their endeavors. While the demise of the major record labels is eminent, the new technological ease of “self-made” recordings and the rise of social media offer many exciting tools to musicians who want to break out and make a career for themselves. All of these factors create a wealth of opportunities and dilemmas for up-and-coming artists.

Spacetaker and Impulse Artist Series host a unique seminar to address some of the challenges and opportunities that musical artists are facing in this new era of musical endeavors. The seminar will include insight from an expert panel of successful musical industry entrepreneurs and music promoters, an open forum to discuss current issues at hand, and recommendations of tools and actions one can take to emerge with confidence and make significant breakthroughs in his/her career as a working artist.
